Player Profile: Benjamin Bender '20

Conner Hastings '20
Calvert Hall is widely known for its fantastic sports programs, but arguably one of our strongest sports is Varsity Soccer.  I asked Benjamin Bender, class of ’20, about how well he is playing and the team as well. Bender responded by saying, “I am playing well and thought that my second half against McDonough was one of the best games I’ve played all season.  Tomorrow is the quarterfinal playoff game and we play Curley. The team has put together a strong set of performances and I think we will have a good shot at winning”. Bender also told me they ended 10:9 and he had 9 goals.

About a month ago, I asked Bender about how the team is doing.  He told me, “Hey Connor, the season has started off well and we are 4:2.  We have a strong group off juniors and seniors that could take us far in the league.  We recently won against MSJ in overtime. In my opinion, we have been able to play a good style of soccer that has been able to break down teams that may have expected us to be weak.  Hopefully we will continue this in the upcoming game against Curley and carry our strong efforts throughout the season”.
Next, I asked him how he is doing personally and for an update on the team, to which he responded with, “I am playing well and have scored 3 goals so far.  I am playing center midfield and have been able to play quick short passes as well as long passes in that position. The update on the team is that we are preparing for Curley on Friday and just had a solid practice yesterday.  Today and tomorrow will be practices where we will have to work hard and also fine tune some things. Thursday, we will work on corner kicks and go through some technical drills to get prepared for the Reif Cup”.
Benjamin Bender has been a member of Varsity Soccer since his freshman year, and in each season has displayed great skills and has yet to disappoint us with his solid game and play. Congratulations to Varsity Soccer on a great season!
