During the summer Calvert Hall began a new project of building two new turf fields in the area between the baseball stadium and the football. These fields will be the new practice areas for soccer, football, lacrosse, competition marching band, and rugby. These fields used to be where those teams, excluding rugby, would have their practices. The grass field had dirt patches everywhere and had little holes that could seriously hurt someone if they weren’t looking. The new addition of the turf fields was a good investment because it gives players/musicians better playing conditions and provides more practice space for teams to practice.
Mike Campbell, number 18 on the field and starting QB on our Varsity Football team. As a freshman Mike played on our JV team. Sophomore year he played on JV then was placed on the varsity roster for the last two games of the season. Junior year Mike played on the varsity team completing 56% of his passes and passing for 2000 yards. He also had a total of 18 touchdowns for the season. Finally, his final year playing Mike injured his knee tearing his ACL. However, Mike started the season well with a historic win over Wise. I put together a little Q&A asking Mike about how his football career went and some highlights.
The other day I caught up with one of the best athletes Calvert hall has seen in years: Owen Johnson. A current Junior, Owen was an All MIAA athlete his sophomore year and even broke a JV mile record. I had the opportunity to ask him some questions and have a conversation with him about himself and running.
The Varsity Volleyball Cards are off to a great start after winning their first five games. The cardinals beat Mount Saint Joe in their first game 3-1 and have not lost a set since.
All sports require one to be physically capable of running, but none require one to run and not stop for mile after mile! Cross country runners train day after day running miles at fast paces, just to run even faster in meets, but thanks to Coach Frein, the cross-country team has recently improved and is and is continuing to get better, due to their hard work. Coach Frein sternly believes that everyone who wants to put in the work should be able to run for the cross-country team. Coach Frein not only teaches many students how to properly run, but also skills such as leadership and accountability. As Coach Frein says, “We always try to moderately stress out guys enough to create much of a stimulus to improve.” The cross-country team, with the newly elected captains Owen Johnson ’20, Eric Janyska ’19, John Mirarchi ’19, and Sam Vermette ’19, plus the newest coaching addition, Coach Lotz, the team is looking forward to a great year.
In his recently published book No Limits, Mr. Mark Amatucci ‘70, Calvert Hall School Counselor and Basketball Head Coach icon, reflects on his distinguished career. He provides a first-hand account of his journey as a basketball coach, including the professional struggles and triumphs he experienced along the way.
Calvert Hall is widely known for its fantastic sports programs, but arguably one of our strongest sports is Varsity Soccer. I asked Benjamin Bender, class of ’20, about how well he is playing and the team as well. Bender responded by saying, “I am playing well and thought that my second half against McDonough was one of the best games I’ve played all season. Tomorrow is the quarterfinal playoff game and we play Curley. The team has put together a strong set of performances and I think we will have a good shot at winning”. Bender also told me they ended 10:9 and he had 9 goals.
Terrence Henderson II '19 is a dynamic player on the Calvert Hall basketball team and is a force to be reckoned with on the court. He has played four years on the team, three of which have been on varsity.
Besides being a member of the Social Studies department, Mr. Jason Hasson is also the new head coach of the Varsity Basketball team. The Hall sat down with him to ask some questions about his background with the sport and how it has impacted his life on and off the court.
